11 Benefits of Fish Oil for Dogs
Fish oil for dogs? When I think of fish oil, I think of those big yellowish capsules. Not very inviting at all. Although, the benefits outweigh my fear of the capsules. For us humans, fish oil is beneficial in many ways, such as heart, brain and joint health.
Did you know that this also applies to our furbaby’s? Yup!
But before you go dishing out fish oil to your dog, there are a few important bits of information you need to know.
What is fish oil?
Generally speaking, fish oil contains two primary omega-3 fatty acids, don’t be put off by the word ‘fatty’ these are healthy fats.
The two largest contributors of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are:
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
These fatty acids fight inflammation which is crucial for disease prevention.
If your furbaby is deficient in omega-3, their overall health can suffer which can affect joints, heart, eyes, skin and coat.
Quick facts on omega fatty acids
- The omega-6 fatty acids are found in oils and animals
- Oils: Soybean, sunflower, vegetable and canola oils
- Animals: Chicken and other animals fats
- Omega-3 fatty acids control inflammation, improve mood levels
- Omega-6 fatty acids help promote healthy coat and skin

Can I give my dog human fish oil tablets?
The simple answer is NO. You will find conflicting information on the internet, so it depends on who you ask (including veterinarians).
A lot of human fish oil tablets are flavoured or have other additives in the tablet. Dogs have different requirements than people.
You need to provide the right balance of the two omega-3 fatty acids and knowing the right dosage to give.
I would recommend getting a specifically designed fish oil for dogs. Then you needn’t worry about the correct dosage to give or any of the additional additives.
Where do I buy fish oil for my dog?
I would recommend buying from a reputable pet store to purchase fish oil such as My Pet Warehouse , they sell fish oil for dogs which is made by Blackmores.
Before you go rushing out to buy some fish oil for your dog speak to your vet FIRST.
